St. Augustine Wedding Cakes, Matched to Your Zodiac Sign
We're a husband-and-wife photography team here in St. Augustine, and we have photographed a lot of wedding cake. Somewhere along the way we started noticing that the cake usually says something about the couple — who wanted the showstopper, who wanted the one people would actually eat, who wanted their dogs on it.
So here are twelve real St. Augustine wedding cakes from twelve St. Augustine and Jacksonville weddings, sorted entirely unscientifically by star sign — and yes, we're both Pisces, so you can probably guess where our loyalties land.
Aries
March 21 – April 19
Aries doesn't do subtle, and neither does this. Three tiers, red roses the whole way up, beaded swags, sitting on a gold stand where everyone walking past has to deal with it. It's the cake version of walking into a room and not waiting to be introduced.
Taurus
April 20 – May 20
Taurus wants it to taste good. Not "good for a wedding cake" — actually good. Chocolate layers, a white drip over the top, more chocolate stacked on top of that. Nothing decorative on this cake that isn't also edible, which we respect enormously.
Gemini
May 21 – June 20
Two tiers, and two completely different moods depending on where you're standing. The white fondant and pearl beading play it classic. The magenta and burgundy petals thrown around the base absolutely do not. Gemini could never pick one, so this cake didn't either.
Cancer
June 21 – July 22
Cancer is the sign that turns a wedding into a family reunion, so of course it gets the sandcastle. Towers, tiny arched doorways, shells worked into the base. Somebody built the whole thing by hand knowing exactly what it would mean to the people in that room.
Leo
July 23 – August 22
Gold leaf. At the Casa Monica. With a topper. Leo is not going to apologize for wanting the photo of the cake to look like that, and honestly, look at it — it earned the spot it asked for.
Virgo
August 23 – September 22
Virgo notices the whole table, not just the cake. Cream on cream, raised botanical detail worked onto both tiers, candles set out in rows, greenery running the length of it, the serving set already squared up and waiting. Nothing here is out of position. That's the entire point of a cake like this.
How to actually pick your cake
- Taste it before you fall in love with a photo. The one you saved on Pinterest isn't always the one you want three bites into.
- Send your baker your flowers, not your mood board. A photo of your actual florals gets you closer than a screenshot of somebody else's wedding.
- Decide who's cutting it and when. It changes where the cake gets set up, and where it gets set up decides what the light is doing to it.
- Two tiers you love beats four tiers you don't. A sheet cake in the back to feed everybody is not cheating. It's planning.
- Ask what the room will be like. Buttercream and a warm Florida reception space have strong opinions about each other.
Libra
September 23 – October 22
Libra wants everything to feel settled, and this one does. Two tiers, cream roses, a bit of eucalyptus spilling over the edge so it isn't too perfect, all sitting on a soft gray stand. Nothing on this cake is fighting anything else on this cake.
Scorpio
October 23 – November 21
White cake, black ribbon bows, lit from below in amber. Scorpio doesn't need the cake to be dark — it just needs a little edge, and it needs to be lit like it knows something you don't. Best-looking cake on this list once the sun goes down.
Sagittarius
November 22 – December 21
Sagittarius was never going to stay indoors for this. One low layer on a glass plate, ringed with daisies, carried out across the grass by hand because that's where everybody already was. No tiers, no stand, no ceremony about it. The best cakes travel.
Capricorn
December 22 – January 19
Capricorn respects a structure, so this cake got set inside one. Three clean tiers, candles ringed around the base, purple linens, and a great circular slab of old-bank architecture standing behind it like a frame. It looks like it was planned a year out, and we mean that as a compliment.
Aquarius
January 20 – February 18
Three ceramic dogs. In a row. On the cake. Aquarius is the sign that quietly skips the part of the plan where the topper is supposed to be two people — and it's always the detail guests are still talking about at the bar.
Pisces
February 19 – March 20
Ours. Deep blue with gold rays coming off it, tucked into the round alcove at The Treasury on the Plaza like the cake and the room were designed together. Pisces gets the dreamy one, and we are not going to pretend to be objective about it.
