About Palm Row
Palm Row is one of downtown St. Augustine's best-kept secrets: a short, brick-paved residential lane lined with palms and a row of six homes built in 1910, just three blocks from the Plaza de la Constitución. It sits in the Old City South neighborhood - the area south of King Street that calls itself America's oldest residential neighborhood - within a short walk of the Lightner Museum and the Casa Monica Hotel.
Where St. George Street bustles, Palm Row simply doesn't. The lane is tucked away from the tourist flow, which is exactly why we love it for portraits: brick underfoot, palm trunks repeating down the row, hundred-year-old facades behind, and almost nobody walking through your frame.

Best Photo Spots on Palm Row
Down the Center of the Lane
The classic Palm Row composition looks straight down the brick lane, with the palm trunks repeating on either side and the old homes closing the frame. The brick underfoot and the greenery overhead do most of the work - all a couple has to do is walk toward the camera.
Palm-Framed Portraits
The palms that give the lane its name make natural frames. Tuck a couple between two trunks or shoot through the fronds for a layered foreground. The canopy and the neighboring buildings keep the light soft and dappled through much of the day, which is forgiving on faces.
The Historic Facades
The row of homes here dates to 1910, and their porches, shutters, and picket details read beautifully as a backdrop. These are private residences, so compose from the public lane - a longer lens compresses the architecture behind your subject without stepping off the bricks.

Best Times to Photograph Palm Row
Early Morning
Downtown St. Augustine is quietest before the shops open. Palm Row is already calmer than the main streets, and a morning start means soft light and an empty lane.
Late Afternoon
As the sun drops, warm light filters between the buildings and the brick picks up a rich, golden tone. It's a flattering window for couples' portraits before an evening dinner in the old city.
Overcast Days
The lane holds up beautifully under clouds - the red brick and the palm greens saturate instead of washing out, and there are no harsh shadows to fight. A good rain-backup spot when the beach light falls apart.

It's a Residential Lane
The homes on Palm Row are private residences. Keep sessions low-key, stay on the public brick lane, and skip porches, steps, and yards. A quiet couple's session is a very different footprint than a production - be a good neighbor.
Pair It With Nearby Spots
Palm Row is about three blocks from the Plaza de la Constitucion, so it chains easily with the Lightner Museum courtyard, Aviles Street, and the rest of the historic district in a single walking session.
Dogs Do Well Here
Because the lane is quiet and set back from traffic, it's one of the easier downtown spots to bring a dog along. One of our recent engagement sessions here featured a corgi who repeatedly stole the show.
Parking
Use the metered street parking downtown or the public parking garage near the Plaza de la Constitucion, then walk in. The lane itself is not the place to stage gear or vehicles.
