Lightner Museum Courtyard Photography Guide

A photographer's guide to St. Augustine's most iconic courtyard

Lightner Museum Courtyard photography location St. Augustine

About the Lightner Museum Courtyard

The Lightner Museum Courtyard is one of St. Augustine's most photographed locations, and the bridge over the koi pond might be the single most iconic photo spot in the city. The Spanish Renaissance architecture, tropical landscaping, and romantic atmosphere make it perfect for engagements, elopements, and especially proposals.

What many people don't realize is that this exterior courtyard is managed separately from the Lightner Museum Wedding Venue inside the building. The courtyard is operated by the City of St. Augustine and The Wedding Authority, who also runs the Amore Wedding Chapel (the small chapel inside the same building, up to 50 guests). You'll need a permit for professional photography, ceremonies, or proposals in the exterior courtyard — but it's well worth the coordination.

We've photographed countless sessions in this courtyard, from surprise proposals where the couple has no idea what's coming, to intimate elopement ceremonies on the bridge. During Nights of Lights season (November-January), the palm trees glow with white lights, creating some of the most magical wedding photos you can get anywhere in Florida.

Best Photo Spots

The Bridge Over the Koi Pond

The most iconic photo spot in all of St. Augustine. This arched bridge over the koi pond is incredibly popular for proposals, elopement ceremonies, and couple portraits. At night during Nights of Lights, the lit palms create pure magic.

The Loggias (Covered Walkways)

The arched colonnades surrounding the courtyard offer beautiful architectural framing for portraits. The repeating arches create depth and that classic Spanish Renaissance look that defines St. Augustine.

Garden Areas

Tropical plants, palms, and lush landscaping throughout the courtyard provide varied backdrops. The greenery photographs beautifully year-round.

Flagler College Views

From certain angles in the courtyard, you can incorporate the stunning Ponce de León Hall towers of Flagler College into your shots. A quintessential St. Augustine backdrop.

Best Times to Photograph

Soft Light All Day

This is an enclosed garden courtyard, walled in by the building on all sides, so it stays shaded and softly, evenly lit for much of the day—forgiving, flattering light with no harsh squinting sun. Direct sun mostly reaches the open center near midday. Late afternoon in the winter months brings the warmest tones as low light skims the upper arches and palms.

Nights of Lights Season

November through January, the courtyard is transformed with millions of white lights. Night portraits here during this time are absolutely stunning—one of our favorite times to photograph at this location.

Early Morning

Beat the tourist crowds and have the courtyard nearly to yourself. Soft morning light is flattering and you'll have more freedom to move around.

Blue Hour

The brief period just after sunset when the sky turns deep blue is magical here. The architectural lighting comes on while there's still color in the sky.

Photographer Tips

Permit Required ($250)

This exterior courtyard is public property managed by the City of St. Augustine—not the Lightner Museum. A permit is required for any professional photography, ceremony, or proposal session: $250 for a ceremony and $250 for a photography/rehearsal session, each granting one hour of use. The permit doesn't give you exclusive use—the public can still pass through. We can help coordinate this for you.

Separate from the Wedding Venue

The Lightner Museum Wedding Venue (interior courtyard and Grand Ballroom) is a completely separate booking. Even if you're having your wedding at the venue, you'll need a separate permit to use this exterior courtyard.

Permits & Availability

The City's Department of Public Affairs issues the permit, and The Wedding Authority serves as the courtyard's on-site Site Manager (their office is in the Lightner Building, 904-826-0166). Availability must be confirmed before applying, and the courtyard can be booked up to 24 months out. One scheduling quirk to know: photography and rehearsal permits aren't issued after 3:30 p.m. on Fridays or Saturdays. We've worked with them for years and know the process well.

Proposal Planning

The koi pond bridge is one of the most popular proposal spots in St. Augustine. We've photographed dozens of surprise proposals here and can help coordinate timing, positioning, and backup plans.

Combine with Downtown

The courtyard is in the heart of downtown, making it easy to combine with other nearby locations like the Cathedral, St. George Street, or the Plaza de la Constitución.

Lightner Courtyard Photography FAQ

Permits, fees, light, and how the courtyard differs from the museum

Yes. The exterior koi-pond courtyard is public property managed by the City of St. Augustine, and any professional photography session, proposal, or ceremony needs a permit. Per the City's official fee schedule it's $250 for a ceremony and $250 for a photography or rehearsal session, with each permit granting one hour of use. The permit also requires a Certificate of Insurance ($1,000,000 general liability), and it doesn't grant exclusive use—the public can still walk through. We coordinate this for our clients. The City of St. Augustine's Department of Public Affairs issues the permit; the Lightner Museum specifically does not manage courtyard photography. The Wedding Authority acts as the courtyard's on-site Site Manager (their office is in the Lightner Building, 904-826-0166) and handles arrangements and any equipment needs. Availability must be confirmed before you apply, and the courtyard can be booked up to 24 months ahead. No. The Lightner Museum allows casual personal photos inside the galleries (handheld, no flash, no tripods), but staged photography—engagement and bridal portraits, weddings, graduations—is not permitted inside the museum, and it doesn't host professional or commercial shoots. The exterior courtyard, with its own City permit, is where portrait and proposal sessions happen. (Source: Lightner Museum Photography Policy.)

Because the courtyard is enclosed by the building on all four sides, it stays shaded and softly, evenly lit for much of the day—wonderfully forgiving light with no harsh sun. Early morning is quietest before tourist traffic builds. Late winter afternoons bring warm tones on the upper arches and palms, and from November through January the Nights of Lights wrap the palms in white lights for magical evening and blue-hour images. Note the City won't issue photography permits after 3:30 p.m. on Fridays or Saturdays. (Source: City of St. Augustine – Lightner Courtyard Permit.)
