St Augustine Documentary Wedding Photographer

Most of your day is yours. We photograph it as it happens, step in for the portraits that need us, and stay out of the way for everything else.

The Approach

What Documentary Means on Your Wedding Day

About 95% of it happens without us asking

Documentary means we photograph your wedding instead of arranging it. Roughly 95% of the coverage is unposed — you live the day, we work around it, and the pictures are of things that actually happened.

That only works if we know you first. Before the wedding we talk through what your day is built around: the parts that carry the most weight, the parts that are private, and the parts you have been counting down to. By the time we arrive we already know which room to be standing in.

The rest of the time our job is to be forgettable. You should notice the photographs afterward, not the photographers during.

The Exceptions

Where We Do Step In

Three parts of the day get real direction

Nobody shoots a whole wedding hands-off, and we would rather say so than let you find out on the day. Three things get direction from us.

Family portraits
We love a good family picture, so this is the part we take charge of. We build the list of combinations with you in advance and check them off one at a time as we shoot, so nothing is discovered missing a month later.
Wedding party portraits
Same list, same method — posed frames of every grouping you want, plus the loose, spontaneous ones that tend to happen in between.
Couple portraits
A mix. Sometimes it is just a suggestion, like a spot worth wandering toward. Sometimes it is direct and hands-on about where an arm goes. And a good share of it is waiting, quietly, for the unprompted thing you would never do on cue.

Outside those three, we are documenting. If you want the fuller picture of how a whole wedding day runs with us, that lives on the wedding photography page.

The White Room

Sarah & Tim, and the Case for Getting Out of the Way

Their couple portraits needed almost nothing from us. Whatever we might have asked them to do would have been a downgrade on what they were already doing, so we put the poses away and followed them around instead.

Tim kissing Sarah on the forehead. The two of them taking off at a run down the cobblestones behind The White Room. We stayed back and kept shooting, and that is the whole session.

Michael & Katie, and Why We Watch Instead of Wait

Michael arrived with a plan and a rough idea of where he wanted to ask. On the day he had to make the call about the actual spot himself, because that is not a thing anyone can script.

So we watched him rather than the plan. He improvised, we read what he was doing, zoomed in, and were already framed when he went down on his knee. Being ready, paying attention, and joining the dots on the spot is most of what this job is.

About Us

Hi, we're Rob & Jill

We're Rob and Jill — a husband-and-wife team who've been photographing weddings around St. Augustine since 2014. We're parents and St. Augustine locals, and after more than a decade we still chase this city's light: the way it pours through the oak canopies and glows off the old coquina walls.

Rob reads light and angles like the engineer he used to be; Jill reads the room. Most of the day we are documenting your story and trying to stay out of the way while we do it.

What our clients have to say
Rob and Jill are two of the nicest people we have met. They are amazing to work with and did an amazing job for my daughters wedding in October at The Treasury. Rob captured amazing photos we will treasure for a lifetime. I highly recommend them and would use them again. Thank you Rob and Jill.

FAQ

Documentary Wedding Photography FAQ

What couples ask before booking us

Ask us anything

No, and we won't claim it is. About 95% of your day is documentary — we photograph what happens, in the order it happens. The exceptions are family portraits, wedding party portraits and your couple portraits, and those get real direction from us. Any photographer telling you every single frame was unposed is selling you something.

Those we take charge of. We build the list of combinations with you before the wedding — both sets of parents, grandparents, siblings, the group shot someone will ask about later — and we tick each one off as we shoot it. The list does the remembering, so nobody gets missed and nobody stands around waiting. Wedding party photos work the same way, with room left for whatever happens between the posed frames.

Sometimes, and it varies minute to minute. It might be nothing more than an idea — a spot worth wandering over to. It might be hands-on, adjusting where an arm goes or how close you're standing. And a lot of it is us waiting while the two of you stop thinking about the camera. We're after small real moments where you get to be you, and we fix the things you'd want fixed while we watch.

We ask, well before the day. Our conversations beforehand are where we learn which parts of your wedding carry the most weight, which parts are private, and which ones you're counting down to. That's the map we work from, and it's the reason we can be in the right room at the right time without anyone having to tell us.
