The Ximenez-Fatio House is one of St. Augustine's oldest surviving buildings, built around 1798 by Spanish merchant Andres Ximenez and constructed of coquina. Owned and operated since 1939 by the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the State of Florida, it sits on Aviles Street—the oldest archaeologically documented street in the United States—and offers an intimate glimpse into the city's Spanish colonial past.

The house museum features a charming walled courtyard garden that serves as a ceremony space for small weddings. Original coquina walls, tropical plantings, and authentic period details create an atmosphere of old-world romance that larger settings simply cannot match.

It's a setting built for intimate, soulful coverage. The intimate scale and genuine heritage character lend themselves to images that feel rooted in place and time rather than generic shots.

What Works Photographically Here

In a world of increasingly large and elaborate wedding settings, this property offers something precious: authentic intimacy. A wedding here feels personal, meaningful, and deeply connected to place.

The courtyard garden is a hidden gem. Enclosed by original coquina walls and filled with tropical plants, it feels like a secret garden in the middle of the historic district. The soft, diffused light is ideal for portraits, and the textures—weathered stone, wrought iron, aged wood—add visual richness to every image.

Location also matters. Being on Aviles Street means a quick step outside for portraits with incredible historic backdrops. The narrow lane feels more like a European alley than a typical American street—it photographs beautifully.

Best Photo Locations

Despite its intimate size, the property offers wonderful photo variety. Here are our favorites:

The Courtyard Garden

Planning Your Timeline

We don't publish generic timelines. They're useless without knowing your date. Here's why:

December 5:30 PM sunset
June 8:30 PM sunset

A 5pm ceremony works great in summer. In winter, it means dark portraits. Your timeline must match your actual date and what matters most to you.

Lighting & Golden Hour

The historic courtyard and grounds provide intimate, sheltered settings with soft light. The 1798 building offers authentic period character.

Time for Photos

We recommend 30-45 minutes for portraits at Ximenez-Fatio House, covering the courtyard, gardens, and historic interiors.

Want more variety? Nearby options:

  • Aviles Street — 2 minutes walk, add 15-20 minutes

Timeline Strategies

Sunset Portraits

Want golden hour magic? We work backwards from sunset. End the ceremony 60-90 minutes before. That gives time for family photos, couple portraits, and the best light.

Brunch or Daytime

Morning ceremonies and daytime receptions mean good natural light all day. Great for summer when afternoons get warm.

Winter & Nights of Lights

Walking distance to Nights of Lights throughout downtown.

Photography Tips

For getting the best photos at this intimate heritage location:

Embrace Intimacy

Ximenez-Fatio House is designed for small, intimate weddings centered on the walled courtyard. This intimacy is its strength. Couples who embrace the close, personal atmosphere create beautiful, meaningful celebrations.

Use Aviles Street

Step outside for portraits on Aviles Street, the oldest archaeologically documented street in the United States. The narrow lane, historic buildings, and charming shops create romantic backdrops steps from the venue.

Afternoon Light is Best

The walled courtyard receives beautiful soft light in late afternoon. We recommend ceremonies timed for 4-5 PM for optimal photography conditions.

Plan for Limited Space

The intimate scale means less room for large photography setups. We work with available light and the natural beauty of the space rather than elaborate equipment.

Wedding FAQ

Common questions about getting married here

The Ximenez-Fatio House is one of the more affordable historic venue options in downtown St. Augustine. Pricing varies based on your event details and the spaces reserved. Weddings are coordinated through the museum's planning partner, Endless Possibilities Event Planning; contact the venue at (904) 829-3575 or through their website for current rates, capacity, and catering and beverage policies. See current photography rates on our packages page.

The walled courtyard garden is the primary ceremony and event space, and the property is designed for small, intimate celebrations rather than large-scale events. Elopements and micro-weddings are an especially good fit. Contact the museum directly for the current guest capacity for your chosen configuration.

Weather backup is limited at this venue. The historic interior rooms can accommodate very small groups if needed, but the courtyard is the primary event space. Keep weather in mind when scheduling, and consider a tent rental for added protection.

Parking is street-only along Aviles Street and nearby downtown streets. The city parking garage on West Castillo Drive is a short walk away. With a small guest count, parking is manageable, but including directions and parking recommendations on your wedding website is helpful for guests unfamiliar with downtown St. Augustine.
