Vilano Beach Photography Guide

A photographer's guide to one of St. Augustine's most photogenic beaches

Vilano Beach photography location St. Augustine

About Vilano Beach

Vilano Beach is one of those spots that locals know but visitors often miss. It's quieter than St. Augustine Beach, has free parking, and—most importantly for photographers—has some of the most dramatic light and scenery on the First Coast.

The jetty rocks are the star of the show here. They create this rugged, natural stage that works for everything from maternity sessions to family portraits. I've photographed countless sessions on those rocks, and every single one feels different because the light and the tide are always changing.

Whether you're looking for a sunrise session with that magical first light or a golden hour session with the sky turning pink behind you, Vilano delivers every time.

Best Photo Spots

The Jetty Rocks

The iconic rock jetty at Vilano is probably my favorite spot on this beach. The texture of the rocks, the way the water moves around them, and that golden light hitting them at sunset—it's unbeatable. Perfect for sitting, standing, or getting those dramatic silhouette shots.

The Dunes & Sea Oats

The dune crossovers and sea oat patches give you that classic coastal look. Great for walking shots, family portraits, and those moments where you want the beach vibe without sand in everyone's shoes.

The Water's Edge

The hard-packed sand near the water creates beautiful reflections at low tide. Couples walking hand-in-hand, families playing in the shallow waves—this is where the candid magic happens.

The Vilano Pier (River Side)

The Vilano Beach pier sits on the river side of the island, out over the Tolomato River and the inlet—not the ocean beach itself. It's a short drive from the oceanfront, with its own free parking, and the concrete pier and pavilion add architectural interest plus open water views looking back toward the historic district. A nice change of pace if you want a different backdrop in the same session.

Best Times to Photograph

Sunrise Sessions

Vilano faces east out over the Atlantic, making it one of the best sunrise spots in St. Augustine—the sun comes straight up over the water. That first light hitting the jetty rocks is pure magic. Plus, the beach is usually empty at dawn.

Golden Hour

At sunset the sun drops inland behind you, over the Tolomato River, rather than into the ocean. The golden hour light still wraps around beautifully—the sky often turns pink and blue behind you for stunning backlit portraits.

Fall & Winter

Fewer crowds, cooler temperatures, and incredible light. December mornings here are some of my favorites—warm enough to be comfortable but with that soft winter light.

Low Tide

Check the tide charts. Low tide exposes more beach, creates those reflective wet sand conditions, and makes the jetty rocks more accessible.

Photographer Tips

Parking & Access

There's an off-beach oceanfront lot with a handful of marked spaces (plus ADA spots) and walkover access to the sand. On busy summer weekends it fills up, but for early morning or evening sessions you'll usually be fine. Driving onto the sand itself is a separate thing—St. Johns County only allows 4WD beach driving via the Porpoise Point/Vilano ramp, with a paid beach pass required March 1 through September 30 and limited daytime hours.

Permits

St. Johns County manages Vilano Beach and runs a special-event/photography permitting system; professional and commercial photography can require a permit, and weddings always do regardless of group size. For a small portrait or family session it's worth a quick check with County Beach Services (904-209-0331) before booking. We'll sort out any permit if your session needs one.

Bring Towels

Especially for jetty rock sessions. The rocks can be damp from spray, and wet butts make for uncomfortable portraits.

Watch the Tide

High tide can make some of the jetty spots inaccessible. I always check tide charts before booking a session here.

Arrive Early

For sunrise sessions, arrive 30-45 minutes before sunrise to get settled and scout the light. For sunset sessions, same deal—golden hour starts about an hour before sunset.
