St. Augustine Beach Photography Guide

A photographer's guide to St. Augustine's most popular beach

St. Augustine Beach photography location St. Augustine

About St. Augustine Beach

St. Augustine Beach is the main beach destination on Anastasia Island, just a few miles from historic downtown St. Augustine. It's where locals and visitors alike come to enjoy wide sandy shores, the iconic pier, and that laid-back Florida beach town atmosphere.

For photography, it offers a different vibe than the quieter Vilano Beach to the north. There's more going on here—the pier, the beachfront shops and restaurants, the steady rhythm of a popular beach. That energy can be wonderful for sessions, especially when couples want that classic beach town feel.

Many of our beach elopements and intimate weddings happen at rental houses along this stretch of coast. The combination of a private ceremony at the house followed by portraits on the beach as the sun sets is hard to beat.

Best Photo Spots

The St. Johns County Pier

The iconic fishing pier is the landmark of St. Augustine Beach. It adds great architectural interest to shots and works beautifully at sunrise when the light comes up behind it. The area around the pier has good sight lines and that classic beach town feel.

The Wide Sandy Beach

St. Augustine Beach has some of the widest stretches of sand in the area. Plenty of room for families to spread out, play, and create those candid moments. The hard-packed sand near the water creates beautiful reflections.

The Dune Crossovers

The wooden walkways over the dunes make for beautiful framing shots. Couples walking hand-in-hand toward the beach, families heading home at golden hour—these transition moments often become favorites.

Beach House Rentals

Many of our elopements and intimate weddings happen at beachfront rentals along A1A. The combination of private ceremony space with immediate beach access makes these locations incredibly special.

The Pavilion Area

The public pavilions near the pier provide shade and structure. Great for meeting clients, quick outfit changes, or shelter if an afternoon storm rolls through.

Best Times to Photograph

Sunrise Sessions

St. Augustine Beach faces east, making it perfect for sunrise photography. That first golden light coming up over the Atlantic is stunning. The beach is quiet in the early morning—often just fishermen and photographers.

Golden Hour

Evening sessions have beautiful warm light even though sunset is behind you. The sky often turns gorgeous colors, and the softer light is incredibly flattering for portraits. Plus, you can hit a beachfront restaurant after!

Off-Season Magic

Fall through early spring means fewer crowds, milder temperatures, and beautiful light. Winter mornings can be spectacular—bring layers but expect gorgeous conditions.

Weekday Mornings

If you want the beach to yourself, weekday mornings are your best bet. Even in summer, early weekday sessions give you space and privacy.

Photographer Tips

Parking

Paid parking is available in the St. Johns County Ocean Pier Park lot (350 A1A Beach Blvd) and at metered/ParkMobile spaces along A1A Beach Boulevard. There's no need for quarters — the lots and meters take cards or the ParkMobile app. Arrive early on summer weekends; downtown-beach parking fills fast.

Permits — weddings and commercial shoots need one

St. Johns County requires a special-event permit for any beach wedding, no matter how small, and a commercial photography permit (around $50) for organized commercial shoots. A casual family or engagement session isn't an organized event, but the County doesn't publish a clean exemption — if your session is anything more than a quick personal shoot, confirm with SJC Beach Services (904-209-0331) before booking. We handle permitting for the weddings and elopements we shoot here.

Beach driving — pass required in season

St. Johns County allows vehicles on designated stretches of beach, but a driving pass is required March 1 through September 30 (2026: $10/day or $50 annual for residents, $100 non-resident), with a 10 mph limit. Off-season (Oct 1–Feb 28) no pass is needed. This is the opposite of nearby Anastasia State Park, where beach driving is banned entirely — so be aware which beach you're on, and watch for slow-moving vehicles near the water's edge during sessions.

Nearby Amenities

Restaurants, restrooms, and shops are all within walking distance of the pier and main beach area. The pier park itself has restrooms — handy for freshening up before or after a session.

Tide Awareness

Low tide gives you more beach to work with and creates those beautiful reflective conditions. High tide pushes everyone closer to the dunes. Check tide charts when planning, especially for sunrise sessions when you want hard-packed sand for reflections.
