Anniversary Photoshoot in St. Augustine

Whether you've been married one year or twenty-five, sessions at the fort, Bridge of Lions, historic streets, and the beach — by Rob & Jill, husband and wife photographers.

Whether you've been married one year or twenty-five, there's something about St. Augustine that makes a couples session feel like a genuine celebration rather than just another photo errand. The old city has this quality of light — especially in the golden hours — that does a lot of the heavy lifting. We're Rob and Jill Futrell, and we've been photographing couples here long enough to know which corners of this city reward you and which ones just look good on a map. Here's what we'd tell a friend planning an anniversary photoshoot in St. Augustine.

Top Locations for an Anniversary Photoshoot in St. Augustine

St. Augustine is genuinely spoiled for choice when it comes to backdrops, which is both a gift and a decision-fatigue trap. Here are the spots we find ourselves recommending most often — and why.

The Castillo de San Marcos Grounds

The old fort is hard to beat for sheer visual drama. The coquina walls, the water views, and the wide green lawn give you a lot of variety in a small area. Go early — like, sunrise early. Once the tour groups arrive mid-morning, it gets crowded fast and the light goes flat anyway.

Bridge of Lions

The Bridge of Lions is one of those St. Augustine landmarks that photographs differently depending on the time of day and year. At golden hour, the reflection on the water and the lit bridge behind you makes for a genuinely striking photo — not because we're hyping it, but because it's just true. Keep in mind it's a functioning bridge, so you're shooting on a public sidewalk. No special setup, but also no control over traffic.

Palm Row and the Historic District Streets

If you want that classic old-Florida-meets-Spain atmosphere, the narrower streets and alleyways around the historic district deliver it. Spanish moss, pastel building facades, old iron gates — it's the kind of location where couples who've never modeled a day in their lives still end up with photos they love, because the setting carries them.

St. Augustine Lighthouse Grounds

The black-and-white spiral of the lighthouse makes a strong vertical element for photos, and the surrounding grounds have beautiful mature trees. Note: drone photography is restricted here, so if a photographer pitches aerial shots at this location, ask them to confirm they have the proper clearance.

The Beach

St. Augustine Beach and the surrounding coastal areas offer something the historic downtown can't — open sky, wind in the hair, barefoot-in-the-sand kind of moments. It's a different feel entirely. Great if you're more outdoorsy as a couple, or if you want that Florida-at-sunset look for your anniversary photos.

Washington Oaks Gardens State Park

This one's a little further south but worth the drive if you want something different. The coquina rock formations along the beach there are unlike anything else in the area, and the formal garden side has gorgeous rose gardens and old oaks. It's a state park, so factor in the entry fee and check current hours before you plan around it.

Timing and Seasonal Logistics

Timing is honestly one of the things couples think least about and regret most. Here's the practical version of what we know from experience.

Golden Hour Is Real

The hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset are not a photography cliché — the light genuinely looks different, warmer, and more dimensional than midday sun, which tends to be harsh and unflattering. For most of the year in St. Augustine, sunrise is somewhere in the 6:30–7:15 AM range depending on the month, and sunset runs roughly 7:30–8:15 PM in summer, earlier in winter. We can give you exact times for your specific date.

Crowd Avoidance

St. Augustine is a tourist city, and the historic district especially fills up quickly on weekends and holidays. If you can schedule your anniversary session on a weekday, or start before 9 AM on a weekend, you'll have a much easier time getting clean shots without strangers in the background. Summer weekends in particular can feel genuinely packed by mid-morning.

Weather and Backups

Florida afternoon thunderstorms are a real thing, especially June through September. A morning session largely sidesteps that risk. If weather becomes an issue on your shoot day, we'll reschedule — we have a standard approach to rain days and we'll talk through it upfront so it's not a surprise.

Best Seasons

October through April tends to offer the most comfortable shooting conditions — lower humidity, reasonable temperatures, and consistent light. That said, summer has its own appeal, especially for beach sessions where the warm water and longer evenings work in your favor.

What to Wear and How to Prepare

This is the part that genuinely affects how your photos look, and it's easier than most people think.

Clothing

For the historic district, flowy dresses and lighter neutral tones tend to photograph well against the warm stone and brick. Avoid overly matchy-matchy outfits — coordinated is better than identical. At the beach, you have more latitude. Whites, creams, and soft colors work. Bold graphics and logos tend to pull focus in ways you won't love later.

Layering for the Weather

Even in the cooler months, St. Augustine can surprise you. A morning session in January might start at 45°F and climb to 65°F by the time you're done. Layers you can peel off — a light jacket over a dress, for instance — give you flexibility without requiring a full wardrobe change mid-session. In summer, lightweight, breathable fabrics are your friend.

Shoes and Terrain

The historic district involves a lot of uneven surfaces — brick sidewalks, cobblestone, grassy areas near the fort. If you're planning to wear heels, bring a flat option to swap into for walking between spots. The beach obviously calls for bare feet or sandals, but if your session starts downtown and ends at the water, having both covered is practical.

What to Bring

A few props can add personality to your photos without feeling forced — think a bottle of champagne, a blanket to sit on, or even your dog if they're part of your family. Don't overpack. Two or three meaningful things are better than a bag full of stuff you'll never use in the actual photos.

On the Day

Give yourself buffer time to get to your location. Parking in the historic district can be genuinely difficult, especially on weekends. Arriving frazzled is not the energy you want going into photos. Build in twenty minutes more than you think you need, and let the day settle a little before the camera comes out.

Anniversary Photoshoot FAQ

Common questions about anniversary sessions

Our anniversary photoshoot pricing in St. Augustine starts at $400 for a 30-minute session at one location and $600 for a 1-hour session — same as our engagement session pricing. The hour gives you time for outfit changes, multiple spots, and more variety in your final gallery.

Golden hour — the hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset. The light is warmer and more dimensional than harsh midday sun. Sunrise sessions also give you the historic district mostly to yourselves, which matters for places like the Castillo and Bridge of Lions.

Our most-requested spots: the Castillo de San Marcos grounds, Bridge of Lions, the historic district streets and alleyways, the lighthouse grounds, the beach, and Washington Oaks Gardens State Park if you want something different. Each one has a distinct feel — we can help you pick based on your style.

For the historic district, flowy dresses and lighter neutral tones photograph well against the warm stone and brick. Coordinated outfits work better than matchy-matchy. At the beach, whites, creams, and soft colors do best. Avoid bold graphics and logos — they pull focus. We'll send a detailed style guide after you book.

For personal photography (not commercial), most St. Augustine locations don't require permits — including the Castillo grounds, public streets, and sidewalks. State parks like Washington Oaks charge a per-vehicle entry fee. We'll handle any location-specific logistics when planning your session.

Two weeks for standard turnaround. You'll get a private online gallery with high-resolution downloads and full print rights — share, print, frame, however you want.

Absolutely. Dogs are welcome at outdoor sessions. Small meaningful props — a bottle of champagne, a blanket, an item from your wedding day — add personality without feeling forced. Just don't overpack.
