More details Less details
St. Cyprian's Episcopal Church has stood at the corner of Lovett Street and Martin Luther King Avenue in St. Augustine's Lincolnville neighborhood since 1900. The congregation began in the 1890s, founded largely through the efforts of Julia Jackson, a Bahamian immigrant who organized services in temporary spaces across town, with support from Emma White, a New York visitor who spearheaded the fundraising and provided building plans. The chapel was built by a local African American craftsman and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The architecture is Carpenter Gothic — steep gables, lancet windows with diamond-patterned panes, a modest bell tower, exposed wooden trusses, and heart pine paneling throughout. The effect is warm, handcrafted, and genuinely historic in a way that larger St. Augustine churches are not.
Today the church welcomes couples of any denomination or faith. The reservation includes rehearsal access, wedding-day use, a day-of coordinator, and a large on-site parking lot. For receptions, the Mission House accommodates up to 50 guests indoors and the Church Commons courtyard — added in 2013 — can host a tented outdoor celebration. Couples planning larger receptions typically pair the ceremony here with a downtown St. Augustine venue.
Photo Locations
The chapel and its grounds offer two distinct settings for ceremony and portrait photography:
The Chapel Interior
Carpenter Gothic architecture with exposed wooden trusses, heart pine paneling, tall lancet windows with diamond-patterned panes, and a stained glass window behind the altar. The handcrafted interior creates a ceremony setting unlike any other St. Augustine church.
The Church Commons Courtyard
A pavered outdoor courtyard — added in 2013 — that can accommodate a 30x50 tent. The modest bell tower is visible from the Commons, giving outdoor portraits a distinct St. Augustine character.
Tips for Your Wedding Day
Confirm Positioning at the Rehearsal
Work with the church's day-of coordinator during rehearsal to establish where photographers may stand during the service. Agreeing on positions in advance prevents any surprises on the wedding day.
Open to Any Faith or Denomination
St. Cyprian's explicitly welcomes couples of any faith tradition and encourages working with an outside officiant — a good option for couples who want the beauty of a historic chapel without a specific religious requirement.
On-Site Reception Options for Smaller Celebrations
The Mission House accommodates an intimate indoor reception (up to 50 guests); the Church Commons courtyard can host a tented outdoor event. Couples planning a larger celebration typically continue to a downtown St. Augustine reception venue.

Common questions about getting married at St. Cyprian's
No. St. Cyprian's welcomes couples of any denomination or faith. Outside officiants are also welcome, so you can create a ceremony that reflects who you are rather than a strictly Episcopal service.
The historic chapel (up to ~100 guests) is the ceremony space. For receptions, the Mission House handles up to 50 guests indoors; the Church Commons courtyard can hold a 30x50 tent for a larger outdoor event. The reservation includes rehearsal time, wedding-day vendor access, and a day-of coordinator.
Couples who need more room than the on-site spaces offer often continue downtown. The Treasury on the Plaza and The White Room are both a short drive away and pair naturally with a Lincolnville ceremony.
