Markland House, also known as the Andrew Anderson House, is a stunning Greek Revival mansion built in 1839. Now part of Flagler College, this heritage property sits on four beautiful acres just blocks from downtown St. Augustine.

The Southern elegance is unmistakable—white columns, wraparound porches, magnolia-lined sidewalks, and mature oaks create an atmosphere that feels like stepping back in time. It's one of the most photographically beautiful locations in the area.

Many couples choose this mansion as their getting-ready location before celebrations at Flagler College's main spaces. The elegant interior rooms and grounds provide exceptional photo opportunities for the preparation portion of the day.

Why We Love Photographing Here

There's something special about photographing at a place with this much history and character. The Greek Revival architecture, the mature landscaping, the sense of Southern refinement—it all comes together to create images that feel timeless.

For getting ready, this property is hard to beat. The natural light in the interior rooms is beautiful, and the elegant surroundings elevate every detail shot. When the bride is ready and steps onto that grand porch for the first time, it's always a special moment.

The magnolia-lined approach to the mansion is one of our favorite spots for couple portraits. There's something quintessentially Southern about walking hand-in-hand beneath those old trees, and the images capture that romantic atmosphere perfectly.

Best Photo Locations

This heritage property offers multiple stunning backdrops:

The Grand Porch

The iconic wraparound porch with its stately columns is the signature shot at Markland House. The white columns against the historic architecture create timeless portraits, especially in the soft afternoon light.

Magnolia-Lined Sidewalks

The approach to the mansion features beautiful mature magnolias and oaks that create a quintessential Southern atmosphere. Perfect for candid walking shots and romantic portraits.

Interior Rooms

The elegant interior rooms with period details provide beautiful getting-ready spaces. Natural window light, antique mirrors, and refined decor make for stunning bridal preparation photos.

The Grounds

Four acres of manicured grounds offer multiple portrait opportunities with garden areas, lawn spaces under the oaks, and no shortage of beautiful backdrops.

The Back Lawn

The expansive back lawn hosts outdoor ceremonies and provides great space for creative couple portraits with the mansion as a backdrop.

Planning Your Timeline at Markland House

We don't publish generic sample timelines because they're useless without knowing your wedding date. Here's why:

December 5:30 PM sunset
June 8:30 PM sunset

A 5pm ceremony works beautifully in summer but means portraits in the dark in winter. Your timeline needs to be built around your actual date and what matters most to you.

Light at Markland House

Historic estate with mature landscaping. The grounds offer filtered light through oak trees and romantic garden settings.

Time for Photos

We recommend 45-60 minutes for portraits at Markland House, covering the estate grounds, gardens, and historic house.

Timeline Strategies

Sunset Portraits

Want that golden hour magic? We work backwards from sunset. Ceremony ends 60-90 minutes before, giving time for family photos, couple portraits, and catching the best light.

Brunch or Daytime

Morning ceremonies and daytime receptions mean lots of beautiful natural light all day. Great for summer when afternoons can get pretty warm.

Venue Timing Notes
