Washington Oaks Gardens State Park Photography Guide
A photographer's guide to one of Florida's most unique natural settings
About Washington Oaks Gardens State Park
Washington Oaks is one of those hidden gems that makes you wonder why more people don't know about it. The area known as "The Rocks" features coquina rock formations along the beach that are genuinely unlike anything else on Florida's coast—ancient shells compressed into these sculptural, honeycomb-textured rocks that look almost otherworldly.
The park is split into two distinct areas: the wild, dramatic beach at The Rocks on one side of A1A, and the cultivated formal gardens on the other. This gives you incredible variety within a single location—you can go from rugged coastal drama to manicured garden elegance in minutes.
It's about a 30-minute drive south of St. Augustine, but the unique backdrops make it absolutely worth the trip for engagement sessions, anniversary portraits, or anyone wanting something different from the typical beach setting.
Best Photo Spots
The Rocks (Coquina Beach)
Known locally as 'The Rocks,' Washington Oaks' coquina rock formations are unlike anything else in Florida. These ancient shell-rock formations create dramatic, otherworldly backdrops for portraits and engagement sessions.
Formal Gardens
The cultivated gardens feature roses, camellias, and azaleas depending on the season. The structured pathways and manicured landscaping provide an elegant, timeless setting.
Oak Hammock Trails
Towering live oaks draped in Spanish moss line the trails through the park. The dappled light filtering through creates a romantic, ethereal atmosphere.
Reflecting Pond
The ornamental pond near the gardens offers beautiful reflections and a serene setting for quieter, contemplative portraits.
Best Times to Photograph
Morning Light
The Rocks beach faces east, so sunrise sessions capture that first golden light hitting the coquina formations. The rocks take on a warm, honey color that's absolutely stunning.
Golden Hour
Late afternoon light filters beautifully through the oak canopy in the garden areas. The beach rocks become backlit silhouettes at sunset.
Spring Season
March through May brings the azaleas and camellias into bloom. The gardens are at their most colorful during this time.
Low Tide
More of The Rocks' coquina formations are exposed at low tide, giving you more options for composition and making the beach easier to navigate.
Photographer Tips
Entry Fee
There's a small per-vehicle entrance fee to the state park. Check current hours as the park closes at sunset.
Location
The park is about 30 minutes south of St. Augustine, near Palm Coast. It's worth the drive for the unique scenery.
Beach Access
The beach and gardens are on opposite sides of A1A. Plan which areas you want to photograph and allow time to move between them.
Footwear
There's a bit of walking between locations, so comfortable shoes are a good idea—we can switch to cute shoes for pictures. Most of our couples and families go barefoot at the beach, but whatever's most comfortable for you works too!
