About Jacksonville Beach
Jacksonville Beach sits on the Atlantic in Duval County, roughly 30 miles and a 45-minute drive north of St. Augustine. For clients who live on the Jacksonville side of the First Coast, that's the whole appeal: a real oceanfront session for family, maternity, engagement, or portrait work without making the drive down to Vilano or St. Augustine Beach.
It's a livelier, more built-up beach than the quieter stretches south of it — the Jacksonville Beach Fishing Pier and the SeaWalk Pavilion at Latham Plaza anchor a walkable oceanfront with restaurants, shops, and hotels just off the sand. That built-in energy is part of the draw for sessions that want a beach-town backdrop rather than an empty shoreline.

Best Photo Spots
The Open Beach
South of the pier, Jacksonville Beach opens into wide, uncluttered sand — plenty of room for a family to spread out, kids to run, or a couple to walk the shoreline without dodging a crowd. It's a straightforward, dependable backdrop that doesn't need much styling to work.
Jacksonville Beach Pier
The city's fishing pier at 503 N 1st Street stretches nearly a quarter mile out over the Atlantic and gives the beach its landmark silhouette. It's a strong architectural anchor for wide shots along the sand, and you can walk out onto the pier itself for a small admission fee if you want the ocean view from above the water.
SeaWalk Pavilion & Latham Plaza
A block or two off the sand at 1st Street North, the SeaWalk Pavilion and Latham Plaza give this beach its town-square feel — open plaza space, palms, and an oceanfront backdrop that reads more "beach town" than empty shoreline. A nice change of pace if a session wants some structure mixed in with the sand.
Best Times to Photograph
Sunrise Sessions
Jacksonville Beach faces east onto the Atlantic, so sunrise is the directional-light session here — the sun comes straight up over the water, same as any beach on this stretch of coast. Sunset instead falls behind you, inland, so if you want the sun itself in frame, morning is the window.
Golden Hour, Evening
Because the sun sets behind you rather than over the water, evening sessions trade a dramatic sun-in-frame shot for softer, even backlight and a sky that turns warm colors behind your subjects — still a beautiful, easier-to-work-with light for portraits.
Weekday Mornings
The city's paid parking program runs Friday through Sunday (plus holidays and events) from early March through early November. Booking a weekday session sidesteps both the paid parking and the weekend crowds around the pier and plaza.

Parking & Beach Access
Most of the street ends along 1st Street have public parking and a direct walk-over to the sand. The city's paid parking program covers roughly March through November, Friday through Sunday plus holidays and special events, at $4 for the first two hours and $2 each additional hour (max $12) — outside those days, or off-season, parking is free.
Beach Rules
Jacksonville Beach is public property, first-come first-served — the city doesn't reserve sections of sand or require a permit or fee for a wedding on the beach, and the same public-beach rules apply to a portrait or family session. Alcohol and glass containers aren't allowed on the sand, and the city asks everyone to protect the sea oats and dunes — no digging or staking above the high-tide line.
Sea Turtle Season
Sea turtle nesting season runs May 1 through October 31. Any setup near the dune line should steer clear of marked nests during those months, on this beach the same as anywhere else on the Atlantic coast.

Jacksonville Beach sits roughly 30 miles north of St. Augustine — about a 45-minute drive depending on route and traffic. For clients based on the Jacksonville side of the First Coast, that's the reason this beach is worth having in the rotation: a real Atlantic beach session without the trip south.
