Wesley Wells Farm Photography Guide
A photographer's guide to seasonal sunflower fields and farm scenery
About Wesley Wells Farm
Private, working farm — sessions must be booked in advance. This is not a public park you can show up and shoot at. The farm runs its own photography bookings through an online calendar, and walk-in photography is not permitted. Don't plan a session here until you've reserved a slot directly with the farm. Wesley Wells Farm is a family-owned St. Johns County farm west of downtown St. Augustine. Wesley Wells is a third-generation farmer who runs the operation with his wife Amanda; it started as a feed-corn farm and grew into an agritourism operation with u-pick fields, farm tours, educational programs, and seasonal festivals. (Source: wesleywellsfarm.com/about-us.)
The farm has two addresses: the u-pick fields at 2680 Ada Arnold Road and the corn pickup location at 7200 County Road 208 (both St. Augustine, FL 32092). The u-pick field opens seasonally (fall, winter, and spring), typically Saturdays 9:00 AM–12:00 PM, with $10/person admission — but hours and openings shift with the weather and the crop schedule, so call ahead at (904) 679-5660 or check their social media before you go. Note that u-pick admission and a photography booking are two separate things.
Wesley Wells Farm is the lone working farm in our St. Augustine photo locations guide — for a different kind of green, garden-like setting, see Washington Oaks Gardens.
Best Photo Spots at Wesley Wells Farm
Sunflower Fields
The farm's claim to fame—rows of bright yellow sunflowers in the u-pick and wildflower fields, an unforgettable open-field backdrop for portraits. Bloom timing shifts year to year, so confirm current status before booking. Open fields take full sun; low side-light near sunrise or in the last hour before sunset is the most flattering on faces.
Crop Maze & Fall Fields
The farm's "Crop Maze & Fall Daze" event runs Saturdays in October, with tall crop rows that create intimate corridors for portraits. Festival days are public and busy—a private photography slot is the way to shoot here without crowds.
Farm Structures
Rustic barns, farm equipment, and wooden fences add agricultural charm throughout the property. These weathered structures work beautifully for family sessions and rustic-themed engagement sessions, providing authentic farm character without being overly manicured.
Open Fields
Beyond the main crop areas, open pastures with distant tree lines offer classic pastoral scenery. These spaces are ideal for wide shots with dramatic Florida skies and provide breathing room during busy weekends when the sunflower fields are crowded.
Entry Areas
The farm's entrance area and parking zones feature rustic signage, hay bales, and seasonal decorations that work well for arrival shots or candid family moments. These spots are easily accessible and don't require walking deep into the fields.
Pumpkin Patches
During fall season, pumpkin patches and seasonal displays create colorful foreground elements. These areas typically feature hay bales, autumn decorations, and varying pumpkin sizes that add texture and seasonal context to family portraits.
Best Times to Photograph Wesley Wells Farm
Sunflower Season
Bloom timing varies year to year, so follow the farm's social media or booking calendar for current bloom status before planning a session. Open fields mean big sky and full sun — plan light on the day.
Fall Season
The farm transforms for autumn with their "Crop Maze & Fall Daze" event (Saturdays in October) and pumpkin season. Public-event days are busy, so coordinate a private photography slot rather than expecting to shoot during festivals.
Golden Hour
The farm's own photography slots highlight 6-8 PM golden hour and sunrise sessions. Late-day light over open fields gives warm, low-angle backlight; arrive early to settle in before the light drops.
Weekday Sessions
Weekday sessions (the farm's lower-priced photography block) tend to be quieter than weekend golden-hour slots. Book in advance either way — walk-in photography is not permitted.
Photographer Tips
⚠️ Private Farm — Book In Advance
This is a private, working farm—not a public park. Photo sessions must be booked in advance through the farm's own online photography calendar; walk-in photography is not permitted. Confirm bloom status and availability with the farm before planning anything.
Photography Booking & Rates
Per the farm's own photography page, sessions are sold in two-hour blocks— about $150 (weekday, Mon-Thu) or $175 (weekend golden hour, Fri-Sun)—including one photographer and up to five guests, with a per-person fee for extra guests. Verify current rates and terms directly when you book. (Separate u-pick farm admission is $10/person and is a different thing from a photography booking.)
Dress for Farm Conditions
Clients should wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes suitable for walking on dirt paths, uneven ground, and potentially muddy conditions. Avoid heels entirely. Light-colored clothing photographs beautifully against sunflowers, while earth tones work well in corn fields.
Insects & Bug Spray
Florida farmland means bugs, especially during summer sunflower season. Bring non-greasy insect repellent for clients, and consider scheduling early morning sessions when mosquito activity is typically lower. Bees are common around blooming sunflowers.
Weather Considerations
Summer heat can be intense in open fields with little shade. Bring water, plan for frequent breaks, and consider rescheduling if temperatures exceed 90°F. Rain can make paths muddy and unsafe. Monitor weather forecasts closely and have indoor backup options.
Location & Access
The farm is located about 15-20 minutes west of downtown St. Augustine. GPS coordinates are reliable, but the rural location means limited cell service in some areas. Factor in drive time and potential traffic when scheduling back-to-back sessions.
Parking Logistics
Parking is in grass fields that can become muddy after rain. Arrive early during peak weekends to secure closer parking spots. The walk from parking to photo areas can be 5-10 minutes depending on which fields are in bloom.
Seasonal Attractions
Sunflowers & spring: The farm's best-known draw is its u-pick sunflower and wildflower fields. The farm runs a spring Sunflower & Tomato Soirée (sometimes referred to as the Sunflower & Tomato Festival) alongside other seasonal events. Bloom timing varies year to year, so confirm current status before planning around it.
Fall: The farm runs a "Crop Maze & Fall Daze" event on Saturdays in October, plus pumpkin season and a Pumpkin Festival + Handmade Market. These are public, busy event days — coordinate a private photography slot rather than expecting to shoot in the middle of a festival.
Corn: The farm grows field corn for hunters, ranchers, and the grain mill, with pickup from the County Road 208 location typically late July through November depending on the year's yield. (Source: wesleywellsfarm.com/corn.)
Photography Access, Rates, and Timing
The farm sells photography access through its own online booking calendar, with sessions in two-hour blocks. Per the farm's photography page, that's roughly $150 for a weekday session (Mon–Thu) and $175 for a weekend golden-hour session (Fri–Sun), including one photographer and up to five guests, with a per-person fee for additional guests. Sessions cover the seasonal sunflower and wildflower fields, pasture views, and natural farm textures. Walk-in photography is not permitted — you reserve a date and time block in advance and pay to confirm. Always verify current rates, terms, and any blackout dates directly with the farm, since prices and bloom windows change. (Source: wesleywellsfarm.com photography page.)
These are open fields, so the look lives on the sky. The farm's own calendar highlights a 6–8 PM golden-hour block and sunrise sessions; low side-light early or late gives the warmest, most flattering result, while midday sun on an open field is harsh and flat. I haven't confirmed the exact compass orientation of any particular field, so plan light on the day rather than promising a fixed front-lit or backlit angle.
Florida heat and bugs are real here. Open fields offer little shade — bring water, plan for breaks, and consider rescheduling above 90°F. Bug spray is a must in bloom season; bees work the sunflowers and mosquitoes are a given on Florida farmland in summer. Closed-toe shoes suit dirt paths and uneven, sometimes muddy ground.
What Makes This Location Special
Unlike St. Augustine's historic locations, this property offers something completely different: wide-open agricultural landscapes, vibrant seasonal color, and a rustic aesthetic that's impossible to find downtown. The sunflower fields create unforgettable engagement and family portraits — walls of yellow blooms that photograph beautifully and feel like a world away from everyday life.
The seasonal nature is both a limitation and an asset. These aren't year-round photo ops, which makes sessions here feel special and time-limited. Clients often plan their engagement sessions or family sessions specifically around sunflower bloom schedules, creating a sense of urgency and exclusivity that adds meaning to the photos.
